Microsoft Security Essentials Ranks as Best-Performing Free Antivirus

Anti-malware testing group AV-Comparatives.org not only gave Microsoft Security Essentials a top rating for malware removal, but now they've given it their best ranking in their performance test as well.

AV-Comparatives.org ran a series of real-world tests running through common scenarios like downloading, extracting, copying, and encoding files, installing and launching applications, and they also ran through an automated testing suite as well. Once the dust had settled, it became clear that not only is MSE one of only three products that both blocks and removes malware well, but it's also very light on system resources.

Out of all the products tested, Microsoft Security Essentials was the best-performing free antivirus solution, and one of only two that received "very fast" on each of the real-world tests, earning it their top award: an "advanced+" ranking. We've been telling you for a while that you don't need to pay for Windows security, and now with MSE ranked alongside the top paid apps in both malware removal and performance, you might want to consider making the switch.

Cell Phone Processors by Texas Instruments

Texas Instruments OMAP (Open Multimedia Application Platform) is a category of proprietary microprocessors that have capabilities for portable and mobile multimedia applications and are developed by Texas Instruments. Many mobile phones use OMAP microprocessors, including most of Nokia's N-series range. Phones known to use OMAP include the N90, N91, N92, N95, N82, E61, E62, E63, E90 and many other Nokia and Samsung devices (such as the Nokia N800/N810 and N900 Internet Tablets). The Palm Pre and Motorola Droid also use an OMAP processor (the OMAP3430). Others to use an OMAP SoC include the Sony Ericsson Satio and the Samsung OMNIA HD. Some of the processors in the OMAP family contain a dual-core architecture consisting of both a general-purpose host ARM processor and one or more DSP. The digital signal processor featured is commonly a variant of the Texas Instruments TMS320 series DSPs.

If you're losing the battle over your workspace to your desktop icons, a secret weapon is one click away. Fences quickly and easily organizes your icons into separate windows on your desktop, either automatically or manually. Labeling these boxes helps keep programs, photos, files, and Web links together, or you might choose to group by project rather than by file type. Whatever your logic, you'll be able to drag and drop fences (and the shortcuts within them) anywhere on your desktop.

You can furthermore drag and drop shortcuts anywhere, and resize the fence. A scroll bar pops up so you can find your icons in fences that you've resized to be smaller than their contents. In addition to sorting shortcuts, you can cleverly hide them completely by double-tapping the desktop; double-tapping again resurfaces them. Fences helpfully lets you exclude select fences from hiding. Customization tools can change the color scheme or take snapshots of your layout at any time, in case you'd like to switch among them without completely redoing your arrangement.

We just wish that creating a new fence was smoother and took fewer steps, and that you could create rules for certain files types to automatically download into specific fences. Perhaps we'll see that in a future premium version. In the meantime, we recommend Fences to anyone looking for a fast, fresh solution to persistent desktop clutter.
